What Dialysis Patients Should Know about COVID-19

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Two young boys from Central Illinois are experiencing a new lease on life, thanks to the power of community support and organ donation.

Just weeks ago, we shared the story of 4-year-old Lincoln, who faced a dire situation as he battled kidney failure. The community responded with overwhelming support, with 75 people calling the donor hotline, eager to donate a kidney to Lincoln. Last week, Lincoln underwent successful surgery and is now recovering well with his new kidney.

Lincoln’s family says the community support is tremendous, and while there will still be post-transplant challenges, his days are looking much brighter.

And in February, we shared the story of then 10-year-old Lee as he shared his need for a kidney during a school presentation. Now 11, Lee received the ultimate gift—a kidney from his mother. His surgery took place just one day after Lincoln’s, and he is reportedly doing great.

The two boys are recovering just a few doors down from each other at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Both families emphasized the importance of living donors, stating, “There are so many children and adults who could benefit from a living donor… signing up could give someone that life-changing gift.”
